Echuca to Narrendera

Another cold start to the day. The day dawned crisp and clear, not a cloud in the sky but a very cold southerly wind blowing.

We both opted for an extra layer and it paid off I think.

Once again long straight roads through pastoral farmland but very dry looking and low stock rates I imagine, at least we saw only small herds of cows and a few sheep.

One thing that we saw in abundance was roadkill, in some places there was a dead kangaroo every 100 metres and we saw at least 2 cars parked on the side of the road with extensive frontal damage.

I didn’t see any live kangaroos thank goodness but I was on high alert just in case. Just a few emu’s grazing away.

We decided on a shorter trip today and we are in a small but very pretty little town called Narrandera. After a quick lunch at a local cafe we checked into our motel and then went for a walk.

We must have looked a bit lost as a lady who was also walking asked us where we wanted to go. She was quite helpful and then strode off for her exercise whilst we meandered along at a more leisurely pace.

A couple of hundred metres further on she stopped and called us forward and there in a eucalyptus tree was a koala bear having a nap. It was very cool for us to see and the first one we have seen in the wild.

No koalas crossing today.

Just sleeping.

We then wandered up to a beautiful lake area, obviously created by a dam and clearly a very popular boating playground in the summer months.

After a lovely Chinese meal we have had a planning session and have decided not to head through the Blue mountains to Sydney then Canberra as the weather for the next week is foul, rainy and cold with snow in the mountains. It is winter after all.

So instead we’re heading a bit further north then west across to Broken Hill then back to Melbourne.

  1. Enjoying your travels. Why can't we make beautiful buildings like the Narrandera Council Chambers still? Great with the Koala !!
